Mirepoix is 8km away and is the main city for the area with numerous shops and places to eat. In total, we would judge there to be about 30 restaurants with the majority being French fare. You will have to travel to the chateau at Camon to experience haute cuisine but the vast majority of the eateries are of a good quality for the prices they charge. The local wine is absolutely fine; we tend to order a demi carafe of the house rose or red at lunch time when we eat in Mirepoix.

The Mirepoix Monday Market is a must go to experience. There are several wine vendors, cheese, sausages, olives, vegetables and other local specialities. Generally there are a few alternative lifestyle troubadour types that lighten up the place with music. The cafes are buzzing. It’s a great idea to go there have breakfast and then do a bit of specialty food shopping.

Carcassonne is about 40mins drive away and is the jewel of the area with its 12th century fortified city. It is a fantastic place to go to with many restaurants in the ancient city and many attractions.

Limoux is a small but interesting place – and the wine. Back in 1531 Sieur d’Arques sold his first sparkling wines a full 150 years before the chaps in Champagne copied him. Limoux remains famous for its Blanquette and Cremant. The main degustation for Sieur d’arques is on Avenue de Mauzac. When you approach Limoux you will need to turn sharp left back on yourself and it’s just there. Takes about 25mins but the quality of the wines you can buy there make it worth it.

Leucate – is the first seaside town you get to after leaving the Deux Mers autoroute (the A61). It’s a lovely sandy resort with many restaurants and is divided between the seaside resort and the main town.

Toulouse – is a bit more than an hours’ drive and is the beating heart of the South West. There are simply too many things to do to give this small synopsis justice but the central plaza is amazing, the shopping top notch. Things to see include the space centre, a tour round Airbus and the cathedral.

Foix is located right at the start of the Pyrenees and is a beautiful market town with a medieval castle. It is about 40mins drive away.
Wineries abound. the closest is the little known Malepere but Corbiere, Limoux, Minervois and Banjuls are all within a short drive.
